Candle Tips

Unwanted Smoke

Is your flame dancing? When a flame flickers too much; it can produce unwanted smoke which can be caused by:

  • A wick being too long
  • Drafts in the air

To ensure a clean burn, extinguish your candle using one of our candle snuffers, trim the wick to 3mm using our wick trimmers and finally make sure it isn’t in direct line of any air currents – then simply relight and enjoy. You can find these everyday candle care products online and instore

Complete Melts

To prevent tunnelling and memory rings; the first burn of your candle is the most important!

To ensure you get an even and clean burn throughout your candle’s life - burn your candle for 30 minutes for every 1cm in diameter, so for example a large jar is approximately 8cm in diameter, so we would recommend to burn it for at least 4 hours to ensure the first layer of wax melts to the edge of the candle before you extinguish it.

If the wax is not allowed to melt to the edge; the candle will create a memory ring around the wick and it can then tunnel. You can support the burn of your candle with the use of our illumalids which helps to steady the flame and keep in the heat, encouraging an even burn.

The 1cm Rule

When there is approximately 1cm of wax remaining at the bottom of your jar candle, we recommend this is where you should discontinue its use as the flame nears the base of the glass it can get very hot – by doing this you will avoid possible heat damage that can be caused to surfaces or the container.

Dramatic Effect

Candles are a fantastic source of creating the right mood! For a really dramatic effect; gather three or more candles in varying heights and/or forms in the centre of your table for a beautiful and dramatic display. You can also influence the height of a candle through jar candle sleeves and holders.

Snug Fit Best

When using sampler votive candles, for the most effective burn it’s best to select a holder that mimics the size and shape of the candle. There’s a huge collection of votive holders to choose from to suit any décor and can be found in store and online.

Choosing the right fragrance:

Sampler Votive Candles & Tarts Wax Melts

Our small Sampler Votive Candles are called Samplers because they’re a great way to sample and experiment with new or different fragrances – with a huge range of sampler fragrances available, you’d definitely find something to your taste. Alternatively, if you prefer a flameless fragrance with a powerful throw, our selection of tarts wax melts are another way in which to experiment with new fragrances in your home

These small but powerful forms also provide an opportunity to experiment with fragrance mixologywhere you can create your own unique fragrance just for you by using complimentary fragrances together.

Fragrance Issues:

Large Rooms

Where you have a particularly large room or open plan living space, we recommend choosing wax that has a wider pool of melted wax which will give off a wide ranging throw – choose from classic loved forms including:

  • Large jar candles
  • Tarts Wax Melts & Warmer

Scent Intensity

Our fragrances are true to life and just like their names; the intensity of those fragrances can vary. If you want a fragrances that is more or less intense think of the strength of its inspiration and you’ll be on the right track.

Fragrance let down

Are you struggling to smell a candle after it has been burning for a while? Sometimes like with any other fragrance product you may temporarily lose the ability to smell the fragrance due to repeated exposure, whereas other’s new to it will detect it.

The best way to reconnect with your favourite fragrance is to try out a new fragrance for a while, before returning to your favourite fragrance and the smell should return.

Sensory Overload

Take a tip from the experts and sniff coffee beans between your candle scents, just like the master perfumers from long ago who learned that coffee beans will neutralise your sense of smell allowing you to enjoy the next fragrance. Alternatively – you can use the sleeve of your shirt or other fabric

Q: Does Yankee Candle Company use lead wicks?

A: There has been a good deal of recent coverage in the media regarding possible health issues relating to candles containing lead wicks, some of which has unfortunately been confusing or misleading. In order to eliminate any concern or confusion on the part of our guests and consumers in general,

All of our products are today manufactured with pure cotton wicks that are free from lead and completely safe. At Yankee Candle we care deeply about the health and well-being of our guests and customers. After all, many of them are our own families, friends and loved ones.

We are therefore firmly committed to producing high quality candle products that can be enjoyed and enjoyed safely.

This has been our mission for over 30 years and we will continue to strive to offer the very best candles available.

Q: How can I keep my candles looking their best?

A: Candles will discolour or fade when they are exposed to intense light for extended periods. We do not recommend displaying your candles for long periods in direct sunlight, fluorescent lighting or other strong illumination. Wax will soften in temperatures over 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This may negatively affect the quality of your candles. Store your candles in a cool, dry place.

Q: Why do candle wicks sometimes become mushroom shaped?

A: When the candle is consuming wax more quickly than the flame can burn completely, carbon deposits may develop. This will most likely occur when the wick needs to be trimmed. Blow out the flame, trim off the wick and carbon deposit and relight. Do not allow the wick trimmings or other materials to fall into the wax pool.

Q: Do you have a candle that "eats" smoke or cooking odours?

A: All our fragranced candles will mask smoke or cooking odours. The Home Remedies range from YC contains a special patented formula that eliminates specific odours.

Q: What is Simply Home by Yankee Candle?

A:Inspired by the simple pleasures of home and family, Simply Home by Yankee Candle is a range of home fragrance designed with both style and value in mind. Simply Home is created with the same wax and to the same high standards as Yankee Candle Classics (Housewarmer), but with a different complexity of fragrance, and in colours that perfectly complement your home décor. Simply Home candles are available in four forms;

  • Large Jar 538g, Burn time 100 – 135 hours
  • Medium Jar 340g, Burn time 55 – 75 hours
  • Wrapped Votive Sampler 49g, Burn time 15 hours
  • Wax Melt 22g, Burn time 8 hours

Q: Can I refill my jar candle when it is empty? Do you recycle the empty jars?

A: Because glass weakens as it accumulates bumps and scratches from use, we do not recommend refilling our jars for re-use as a candle. However, they make terrific holders for all kinds of things around your home: buttons, nails, cotton balls, potpourri, seashells ... whatever small collections you may want to display. Additionally, most local recycling agencies will accept empty Yankee Candle jars with other glass jars.

Q: How do I use Wax Melts®?

A: Wax Melts offer you exceptional home fragrancing without the mess of traditional simmering potpourri. Place your Wax Melt® in the top of a dry potpourri burner and never add water. Light one of the unscented Wax Melt® Warmers (never use scented tea lights) for a controlled low flame made especially for our wax Melt warmers. When melted, the Wax Melt® will release its wonderful fragrance. You can also mix different fragrances together to create your own unique blend of aromas.

Q: How can I remove candle wax from fabric?

A: Whenever available, we suggest that you consult the laundering instructions provided by the manufacturer of the tablecloth or other fabric. Professional cleaners are also valuable sources of information.

Q: How do you make your candles smell so authentic?

A: That's our secret! We actually have a committee dedicated to researching fragrances. Once the committee recommends a candle, a separate group of individuals from throughout our company test it for authenticity of fragrance and quality of burn.

Q: Which is your most fragrant candle?

A: Our jar candles contain the highest percentage of fragrance oil. More fragrance is emitted from our 22 ounce jar because the pool of melted wax it produces is larger.

Q: If I wanted to use my empty Yankee Candle jar for storage, how can I remove the metal wick base?

A: This is a relatively easy process. Once all wax is removed, simply pour in enough rubbing alcohol to cover the base and allow the jar to sit for a few days. The rubbing alcohol should soften the glue and release the base. It is important that you allow the rubbing alcohol time to work and that you don't pry at the base with your hand or any object.

Q: Why does it say to discontinue using the candle when a half inch of wax remains?

A: The glass can get hot on the bottom as the flame nears the base of the jar and most of the wax has been consumed. When this instruction is followed the glass will not get too hot. For your safety, we also recommend burning all candles on heat resistant surfaces, such as a plate or trivet.
